Chapter 43: Garden Maintenance
Śrīla Prabhupāda Uvāca 43
One day Śrīla Prabhupāda took his morning walk on the temple grounds in Coconut Grove. While walking in the yard, he turned to the temple president and asked, "Why everyone else's yards are clean? Here there are only leaves on the ground?"
"Well, under the leaves there is nothing but dirt," the devotee responded. "The leaves keep the dirt from rising."
"There are lawns everywhere," Śrīla Prabhupāda replied. "Why, here you have dirt?"
Usually the grounds in New Navadwip were very nice, but one time Śrīla Prabhupāda arrived and they had not been maintained.
"Why this garden isn't taken care of?" Śrīla Prabhupāda asked while touring the property.
"Śrīla Prabhupāda," Sukadeva Dāsa said. "There is no one to do it."
At the time, there were approximately 20 devotees walking with Śrīla Prabhupāda.
"How is this?" Śrīla Prabhupāda asked looking around at his disciples. "No one to do it?"
To make advancement in devotional service one must facilitate the pleasure of the spiritual master. By doing so one gets the grace of Kṛṣṇa. We are Dāsa Dāsa anu Dāsa.
